Eight years after the release of the hit horror film Hereditary from director Ari Aster, the director has opened up about how he wrote a prequel for the critically acclaimed feature but revealed that he doesn't want to develop it further.

In a recent Q & A discussion, the filmmaker said, "I wrote a prequel to this." But he quickly added, "It never feels like the right time. It’s a prequel, not a sequel, so I don’t know where this goes."

Prequels and sequels are the hot trend among filmmakers now, but Aster's decision of not wanting to make another part to the movie or create a universe surrounding the characters, has garnered mixed reactions from audiences online.

Starring Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and Gabriel Byrne, Hereditary follows Annie Graham, a grieving artist who discovers disturbing secrets about her recently deceased mother. Soon, her husband Steve and their children, Peter and Charlie, are tormented by sinister occurrences.

It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018, and later released theatrically. The film garnered critical and commercial acclaim, and earned over $90 million worldwide and became a massive profitable venture.

Hereditary catapulted Aster's fame who later went on to make Midsommar (2019), Beau Is Afraid (2023) and Eddington (2025).
