The Brad Pitt starrer F1 is one of the highest-grossing films of 2025, having grossed more than $630 million at the global box office, according to reports. Based on Formula One racing, the film from director Joseph Kosinski ran in theatres for months on end, defying the modern norm of films becoming available on streaming platforms around a month into their theatrical releases. However, the sports film is not without its detractors. Even at the time of its release, some audiences found its story to be rather straightforward.
The latest to offer critical thoughts about F1 is actor Jodie Foster. In a conversation about the use of AI in cinema and the future of the American film industry at the recent Aspen Ideas Festival, Foster said that the Brad Pitt starrer feels like a film made with artificial intelligence. "I don’t say this disparagingly—how could I? This movie went on to make millions of dollars," the actor said before suggesting that it is made with AI.
Jodie Foster also argued that the film has a structure that feels exactly what one would find in filmmaking school and that its dialogue appears computer-generated. "The actors say the lines exactly the way it would be written if a computer was writing exactly what would be the right thing for that time," Foster argued.
Interestingly, F1 not only earned millions at the box office but also secured a Best Sound Oscar win, in addition to Academy Award nominations in the Visual Effects, Best Picture, and Film Editing categories. The actor's comments come at a time when blockbuster film is set to have a sequel as well.
Besides expressing her criticism of F1, Jodie Foster also said that AI would contribute to the elimination of many jobs in the film industry.
