Following the praise for her directorial debut The Chronology of Water, Kristen Stewart hinted at a possible return to Twilight, the vampire franchise that turned her to an iconic actor.
While attending the Palm Springs Film Festival, Stewart was asked by Entertainment Tonight whether she would consider revisiting one of her earlier projects, such as Twilight, this time as a filmmaker.
The popular star, who rose to global fame with the 2008 film adapted from Stephenie Meyer's novels, also praised the filmmakers behind the franchise, Catherine Hardwicke, Chris Weitz, David Slade, and Bill Condon, director of the two-part Breaking Dawn.
She said that she loved what each of the directors brought to the films, noting that their approaches were distinctive, offbeat and firmly rooted in a time before they had fully found themselves in their own or reached mainstream success. Stewart went on to note that with the backing of a big budget and strong creative support, she would be keen to revisit the material, even suggesting she would be open to re-imagining the franchise as a remake.
The Twilight franchise continues to enjoy a strong audience interest. The film had a limited theatrical re-release last year to mark the first novel's 20th anniversary. The films, which are a popular rewatch staple for fans, were also made available for free on YouTube ahead of their theatrical return. Collectively, the Twilight films rank among the highest-grossing young adult franchises, with a worldwide haul exceeding $3.3 billion.
In 2024, Netflix had announced a straight-to-series order for an animated Twilight series inspired by Stephenie Meyer's 2020 companion novel Midnight Sun, which retells the story from the perspective of Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson in the films.
