Following Robert Duvall's passing on Sunday, a lot of the attention has been on his role as the Corleone family's consigliere, Tom Hagen, in director Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 film The Godfather and its 1974 sequel. A bit like his character in the films, Duvall is known for voicing out his opinion, regardless of whom it pertain to.

Many years ago, the actor said that he did not agree with the treatment of Marlon Brando's character Don Vito Corleone in the epic adaptation of Mario Puzo's novel. Don Vito is treated as a noble family patriarch, and the film does not really show him commit any violent acts.

Speaking about this aspect, Robert Duvall said that he would not agree with such an approach to the Don Vito Corleone character. "Brando said the head of the Mafia is no worse than the head of DuPont or that of General Motors. That may be true, but you may go away and lose your career with the head of DuPont or the head of General Motors. You may lose a lot. You may be ruined if they want to excommunicate you, but you don't lose your life one-to-one, and there is the difference," Duvall explained.

According to the legendary actor, such corporate heads are not anywhere as bad as Mafia chiefs, such as Corleone, "because they do not kill one-to-one" like how the others would.

Duvall also recounted a story that one of his affiliates told him about Lucky Luciano throwing the dinner table over in a fit of anger. Duvall found it inappropriate that Corleone did not show similar anger in The Godfather. "I would like to have seen that from someone like Brando's character. That one-to-one violence that's there. You can't play him like an administrative guy," Duvall opined.

He added, "If you really think that the head of DuPont is as bad as the head of the Mafia, then play him bad. I think it was muted that way."
