Screenwriter Luke Piotrowski is making his directorial debut with a supernatural thriller titled Blasphemous, starring Karen Gillan, Clive Owen, and Josh Hutcherson in the main roles. Piotrowski is known for his work as a screenwriter on films such as Hellraiser (2022) and last year's She Rides Shotgun. The makers plan to commence production on the film in the state of New York in August. Producers include Thunder Road, known for its affiliation with Keanu Reeves' John Wick films, and Dwayne Johnson's Seven Bucks Productions.

Piotrowski is set to direct Blasphemous from his own screenplay, which entered the Black List in 2023. For the uninitiated, the term 'Black List' refers to a list of popular screenplays in Hollywood that await production.

The film is described as a blend of Training and The Exorcist. It stars Hutcherson as an inexperienced priest and Owen as the former's devout mentor. The plot follows their attempt to take a possessed youngster (Gillan) to a secure place to perform an exorcism on her. However, her sudden escape throws a spanner in the works, putting the rookie priest and his mentor's lives at stake and their religious beliefs through the rigours.

Producing the film are Scott Strauss of Badlands, Erica Lee and Basil Iwanyk of Thunder Road, and Hiram Garcia, Johnson, and Dany Garcia of Seven Bucks. Besides starring in the film, Gillan is also set to produce it with her Red Riot Pictures partner Jess Biddle.

Speaking about the film, Strauss stated, "It’s a one-of-a-kind genre ride that features sharp dialogue, compelling characters, and powerful ideas."

Presently in production for the next Jumanji project, co-starring Johnson, Gillan is set to star in Chad Stahelski's Highlander remake as well. Hutcherson is known for his roles in Five Night’s at Freddy’s and The Hunger Games. On the other hand, Owen most recently appeared in a villain role in the action film Cleaner and as a detective in the limited series Monsieur Spade.
