James Gunn has officially finished shooting Superman: Man of Tomorrow, taking the highly anticipated DC sequel another step closer to its theatrical release. The filmmaker shared the update on social media, posting behind-the-scenes pictures with his cast and crew.
Gunn marked the end of principal photography with a message of gratitude to everyone involved in the production. “That’s a wrap on principal photography for ‘Man of Tomorrow,’” he wrote on Threads, describing the shoot as a joyful experience. He also revealed that Nicholas Hoult, who plays Lex Luthor, jumped into a lake after filming his final scene. The filmmaker’s other photograph featured members of what he called the film’s “brain trust” gathered around the video village during production. Gunn credited the team for making the filmmaking process enjoyable.
The sequel follows the events of Gunn’s 2025 Superman, with David Corenswet returning as the titular superhero. This time, however, the Man of Steel is set to find himself working alongside his long-time nemesis Lex Luthor. The unlikely alliance comes when the pair face Brainiac, a far more dangerous threat played by Lars Eidinger.
Several familiar faces from the first film are also returning. Rachel Brosnahan reprises her role as Lois Lane, with Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. Sara Sampaio will also return as Eve Teschmacher. Milly Alcock, who briefly appeared as Kara Zor-El in Superman, will have a larger role in the sequel following her turn as the lead in Supergirl. Aaron Pierre is also joining the film as John Stewart, though audiences will first see him as the character in HBO Max’s Lanterns.
Gunn has been sharing occasional glimpses from the production throughout the shoot. He first confirmed that cameras had started rolling in April with a cryptic set photograph featuring a “Luther, A” badge, a chessboard and a packet of Ruffles. In June, he followed it up with a first look at Lex Luthor’s war suit, teasing fans with the caption, “Fit check. Live from the set of Man of Tomorrow.” Superman: Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to arrive in theatres on July 9, 2027.
