On Friday, Adam Sandler announced that production on the film Grown Ups 3, directed by Kyle Newacheck, is underway. It comes around three months after the announcement of the development of the film for Netflix. The third part in the Grown Ups franchise reunites Sandler with director Newacheck after their collaboration on Happy Gilmore 2, which too is available on Netflix.
Grown Ups 3 brings back Adam Sandler as talent agent Lenny Feder, along with Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider as Feder's friends. It is worth noting that Rob Schneider was not part of Grown Ups 2 (2013). The returning cast also includes Salma Hayek (Lenny's spouse Roxanne Chase-Feder), Maya Rudolph (the Chris Rock character's wife), and Maria Bello (Kevin James' onscreen partner).
Also returning for the sequel are Shaquille O'Neal, Colin Quinn, Tim Meadows, and Nick Swardson. Adam Sandler's wife Jackie as well as daughters Sunny and Sadie will also comeback for it. Meanwhile, Alexys Nycole Sanchez and Jake Goldberg reprise their roles as Feder's children.
The new additions to the franchise include Deon Cole, Julie Bowen, and Bailee Madison, whose roles remain under wraps.
Besides starring in the film, Sandler has also written the screenplay along with Fred Wolf and Tim Herlihy. The Grown Ups sequel has the poignant absence of the late Cameron Boyce, known for playing Feder's son Keithie in the franchise. It remains to be seen whether the film's script will address Keithie's absence, even though the makers are expected to pay tribute to him in some way.
The plot follows longtime friends and their spouses as they visit Europe in order to spread the ashes of their close friend and prove that they can party even in their sixties, as per Variety.
According to reports, the film is expected to arrive on Netflix sometime next year.
