Zendaya, who is currently on a promotional spree for her upcoming film The Drama, has opened up on why she keeps certain events in her life a private affair and explained the reason behind not confirming or denied her speculated marriage with her longtime partner Tom Holland.
The couple first began dating in 2021, a few years after they met on the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming. The couple first worked together on Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017 and Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. While Tom confirmed their engagement in an interview last year, the couple have been keeping their marriage a secret. While they were spotted wearing wedding bands, neither of them shared pictures or revealed to any publication about their marriage. But stylist Law Roach, earlier last month, shared that they got married and that the media "missed it."
Zendaya, who recently appeared on The New York Times’ Modern Love podcast alongside her The Drama co-star Robert Pattinson, said, "I just feel like for me there is a level of a parasocial investment in my personal relationship, which I understand."
Acknowledging the setbacks that come with being a public personality, she said, "I'm aware that I'm a public person and so is he, and I’m also aware that we’ve grown up in front of people and we’ve done movies where we fall in love with each other, so I really do understand that, and I don’t want to dismiss that like, ‘Stay out of my business’ or whatever."
Underlining that she is a very private person, Zendaya said she tries her best to be able to have things for herself and for Tom Holland as well. While Zendaya and Holland are not trying to "hide (themselves) from the world”, she said that they are trying to “preserve things" for themselves in order to "maintain that joy" between the two of them and their loved ones.
While Zendaya understands that there's a lot of public interest in her relationship, she marked her boundaries clearly by refusing to share every detail with fans. "I hear it, but I also (have) my own little boundaries of what I like to bring up and talk about, but then also what I'm also willing to share, you know? I just try to find the balance in the middle there," she added.
Elsewhere in the interview, Zendaya shared what she loves about her partner. "I knew this is my person because I don’t feel nervous around them," she said, adding, "I feel really peaceful, and I feel really calm like, oh, I actually feel more nervous when I’m away from you than when I’m with you."
