Marlon Wayans' new horror film, titled Him, with director Justin Tipping, has opened to negative feedback from critics, but the actor is standing firmly by his film. He took to Instagram to remind the audience that cinema is subjective, just like any other form of art. Encouraging viewers to watch his film, despite the negative takes on it, Wayans wrote, "Just to be clear…I respect critics. Their job is to critique. I respect their work. It shapes our industry. But an opinion does not always mean it’s everyone’s opinion. Some movies are ahead of the curve." He went on to add, "Innovation is not always embraced and art is to be interpreted and it’s subjective. I’ve had a career of making classic movies that weren’t critically received and those movies went on to be classics. So don’t take anyone’s opinion just go see for yourself. Love to all."

For Wayans, the other films with bad reviews that became commercially successful and/or gained cult following include White Chicks, the first two Scary Movie films, A Haunted House, and Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood.

Him stars Wayans as a legendary NFL player who takes a talented young quarterback (Tyriq Withers) under his wing and teaches him how to attain success in the American football league. However, it becomes important for them to make sacrifices, metaphorically and otherwise, to have an impact on the league.

Him also stars Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker, Jim Jefferies, Tierra Whack, and Naomi Grossman, among others. The film hit theatres around the world on September 19, Friday. According to reports, the horror feature has grossed around $14 million from theatres worldwide and is even topping the box office in North America in spite of negative reviews.
