On Thursday, we reported that The Summer I Turned Pretty movie is in the works, following the series finale. The movie is also set to be directed by Jenny Han, whose books have been adapted into the series.
Now, on the Today show, showrunner Jenny Han and Lola Tung, who plays Belly, have spilt the beans on the upcoming film and what it will entail.
Many fans on the internet wondered why the show's last episode didn't feature a wedding, despite the third book in the trilogy having one. To this, Jenny Han said, “I can say that there is another big milestone for Belly, so we'll continue with that journey.”
While Han couldn't divulge too many details about the film, she said, "It's still a little too soon to say. But Sarah Kucserka, my co-showrunner, and I have finished a draft, so we're chugging along."
However, fans, who have been receiving a season of The Summer I Turned Pretty every summer for three consecutive years, cannot expect the movie next year. Jenny Han confirmed, "We don't know when it's coming out, but not next year. Still have to make it,” she said.
When Lola Tung was asked if she could talk about the film, she frankly said, “I mean, not much.” She added, "We've known for a little bit, but it's fun that it's finally out there in the world."
The third season finale, which marked the last episode of the entire series, premiered on Wednesday. Belly and Conrad finally unite in Paris, returning back to their summer house in Cousins many years later.
