Legendary Hollywood actor Robert Redford has passed away at the age of 89, confirmed Cindi Berger, the actor's publicist, in a statement to the media. “Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” stated Berger. “He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy," the publicist added.

An actor who started his career with 1962's War Hunt, Redford is known for his roles in films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President’s Men, The Sting, and The Way We Were, among others. Redford is one of the many legendary Hollywood actors to not win a Best Actor Oscar, but he won a Best Director Academy Award in 1981 for his work on Ordinary People. Redford wanted to quit acting after 2018's The Old Man and the Gun, but he came back to reprise his MCU role of Alexander Pierce in the subsequent year's Avengers: Endgame. It effectively turned out to be his lasting outing in front of the camera.

The actor is also known for backing independent cinema to a great extent, as the person who found the Sundance Film Institute. Also a filmmaker, the actor is known for his charisma and charming screen presence, which he exhibited even late into his career, as evident in films such as The Old Man and the Gun.
