Hollywood actor Walton Goggins, best known for his memorable turns in The Hateful Eight, Django Unchained, and The White Lotus, has boarded the upcoming action film Painter.

The film marks the directorial debut of veteran stunt coordinator Garrett Warren and is penned by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad. The story follows a highly trained young woman who must embark on a dangerous mission to rescue her kidnapped father, a role that will see Goggins and Prey star Amber Midthunder share the screen as father and daughter.

Infrared Pictures president Drew Simon previously teased that Painter aims to deliver a new kind of action icon. “This will be a seminal action hero film, making Midthunder into this generation’s Sarah Connor,” Simon said. “We loved Kolstad’s high-octane script, and with Garrett Warren at the helm, this movie is set to ignite an exciting new action franchise.”

Originally, Reacher star Alan Ritchson was attached to play opposite Midthunder but had to exit due to scheduling conflicts.

Adding to the star power behind the scenes, filmmaker James Cameron has come on board as executive producer. The project is being produced by Drew Simon and Sam Speiser under FilmNation’s Infrared Pictures banner, alongside Kolstad and his manager Josh Adler. JR Young will oversee the production for 20th Century Studios.

Meanwhile, Goggins is keeping busy with an animated feature titled Harry and the Mutant Mid-Century Furniture, directed by Michael Skolnick. Set in 1962, the sci-fi comedy imagines a world where fallout from atomic testing gives birth to sentient furniture. Goggins joins a voice cast that includes Ron Funches, Chris Parnell, and Shondrella Avery. The film follows Harry, a 10-year-old boy dealing with loss, who finds unlikely companions in a wise recliner and a feisty ottoman.
