Christopher Nolan has been a pioneer of the IMAX format of filming. But his upcoming historical epic, The Odyssey, will be the first film to be shot entirely with IMAX 65mm cameras.
Speaking to Empire magazine, about the new casing on IMAX cameras, dubbed the blimp, Nolan said, "The blimp system is a game-changer. You can be shooting a foot from (an actor’s) face while they’re whispering and get usable sound. What that opens up are intimate moments of performance on the world’s most beautiful format."
Nolan has also famously destroyed IMAX cameras shooting intense sequences in his films. But the director said, "I did not destroy an IMAX camera on this film. I have destroyed several in my time, but these ones survived The Odyssey."
Nolan is adapting Homer's epic poem of the same name. The Odyssey, which is set to release in 2026, stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, whose 10 year journey after the Trojan War forms the story. Tom Holland stars as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Charlize Theron as Circe. The cast also includes Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Mia Goth, and Jon Bernthal, among others.
The Odyssey is set to release theatrically on July 17, 2026.
