Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is reuniting with A24 after The Smashing Machine for Breakthrough, reports Deadline. The Smashing Machine is directed by Benny Safdie and also stars Emily Blunt.

The story of Breakthrough is set in Southern California, in 2000, and centres on an outcast who is influenced by a motivational guru, whose charm hides his manipulation and inner darkness. Johnson is set to play the role of the guru. The rest of the roles are yet to be cast.

The Smashing Machine is a biopic of MMA fighter Mark Kerr, which is directed by Benny Safdie in his first feature solo directing debut. Safdie previously directed films, like the Adam Sandler-starrer Uncut Gems, with his brother Josh Safdie. Johnson is reuniting with Blunt after Disney's Jungle Cruise.

Described as a psychological thriller, Breakthrough is written by Zeke Goodman. Johnson is producing the film with Dany Garcia under their Seven Bucks Productions. Stacy Sher is also producing under her Shiny Penny Productions. Jacob Epstein and Justin Wolf are serving as executive producers under their Lighthouse Management and Media. A director for Breakthrough has not been attached yet.
