Distributor Lionsgate removed Saw XI from its release calendar for this year, replacing it with The Strangers: Chapter 2. As a result, the second part in the slasher film franchise will hit theatres on September 26 in place of Saw XI. Renny Harlin returns to direct the second instalment in the franchise, alongside screenwriters Alan R Cohen and Alan Freedland. Actors Madelaine Petsch, Gabriel Basso and Ema Horvath reprise their roles from the first part. In last year's film The Strangers: Chapter 1, anonymous people wearing masks attack a couple in a remote cabin. The film ends on a cliffhanger, with one of the main characters seemingly surviving the harrowing experience in the cabin.
Harlin’s film from last year is a remake of a 2008 film, starring Liv Tyler, which also has a sequel titled The Strangers: Prey at Night. The film earned mostly negative reviews but, according to reports, it is among Lionsgate's better-performing films at the global box office last year, having minted around $50 million.
On the other hand, Lionsgate is yet to announce a new release date for Saw XI.
