Netflix's recent hit series Adolescence from UK has been making waves across the world for its haunting portrayal of how teenagers in the new generation consume content online and are shaped by them.
Within days of its release, the miniseries—which follows the arrest of young Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) for killing his schoolmate and the devastating impact on his world and those around him—earned a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Graham, who co-wrote the series, also takes on the role of the boy’s father Eddie Miller. The four-episode series shot in one-take has grabbed eyeballs worldwide and is currently on the top of the platform's most-watched, even in India. Surprised by this revelation, Graham said to Rolling Stone, "I got a text from a mate of mine, telling me how big Adolescence is in India,” he says. “And my first response was, 'Hold on...did you say India?! Did I hear you correctly?’ Apparently, it’s really striking a nerve there."
Several celebrities including Alia Bhatt, Anurag Kashyap, Trisha Krishnan, and Hansal Mehta, among others have been raving about the show on their social media handles. Speaking about its worldwide impact Graham said, "It’s like we dropped a stone into this pond, and the ripple effect it’s produced has been unbelievable."
Inspired from real-life events, the idea came to him during a car ride with his close friend Philip Barantini. "I swear on my late mother’s life. I had the entire show in my head. Like, the whole thing", he told the publication.
Graham co-created the Adolescence with Jack Thorne which also stars Ashley Walters, Erin Doherty, Faye Marsay, and Christine Tremarco in pivotal roles.
