Adam Sandler is all set to reprise his role as the titular Happy Gilmore, the former hockey player turned unlikely golf sensation after nearly three decades.

While the anticipation and excitement surrounding the film has been high, Adam Sandler revealed to femalefirst.co.uk that the seed for the sequel was planted after he was constantly asked about the sequel for the film wherever he went.

“When I walked down the street a lot of times people (would) say, ‘You ever gonna do Happy Gilmore 2?’ And for 28 years, I was like, ‘What are you talking about? No.’ And then all of a sudden, I was like, ‘Maybe’... people kept asking. And then it just felt right,” he shared.

In the sequel, Adam Sandler is reprising his role as the titular Happy Gilmore, the former hockey player turned unlikely golf sensation. Sandler also noted how the second film picks up at a significantly turbulent time in the character's life. “His life isn’t perfect right now – at least at the beginning of the movie. And he’s a family man, and he’s gettin’ back into the golf game,” he said.

Apart from Sandler, the returning cast of the film includes Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald and Ben Stiller. The incoming cast comprises Bad Bunny, Sandler's daughters Sadie and Sunny, and Travis Kelce. The actors will be joined by professional golfers Scottie Scheffler, John Daly, Rory Mcllroy and Bryson DeChambeau.

“I don’t know how it happened. We wrote ‘em stuff and everybody was kind enough to come. And everybody in it did a great job. Every day someone cool would show up and we’d hang out,” said Sandler on assembling an ensemble cast for the film.

Sandler, Tim Herlihy, Robert Simonds, and Jack Giarraputo are returning as producers, with Sandler and Herlihy co-writing the screenplay, just as they did for the first film. Happy Gilmore, originally released by Universal in 1996, became a beloved cult classic.

Happy Gilmore 2 is scheduled to release directly on Netflix on July 25.
