Are the mothers of 'mama's boys' overbearing, intrusive, and overtly suspicious? The Girlfriend, puts forth all those questions as Prime Video released a teaser for its upcoming drama series. The six-episode series stars Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke in the lead. The drama is based on Michelle Frances' novel The Girlfriend.

The story of The Girlfriend centers on Laura (Wright), a successful and well-established woman, who dotes on her son, Daniel (Laurie Davidson). When Daniel introduces his girlfriend Cherry (Cooke), Laura's life is changed as she suspects Cherry of hiding something.

The teaser introduces the Cherry with Laura voicing her opinions on her through a voiceover. We are shown the ruthless ambition that Cherry holds, and the things she is capable of doing to gain what she wants. We also see how close she is with Daniel, who self admittedly is a "mama's boy". The trailer ends with Laura asking Daniel if Cherry reminds Daniel of Laura.

The cast of The Girlfriend includes Waleed Zuaiter, Tayna Moodie, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Karen Henthorn, Anna Chancellor, Leo Suter, and Francesca Corney.

Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher are adapting the novel for Prime Video. Wright and author Frances serve as executive producers with Asher, Will Tennant, Phil Robertson, John Zois, and Dave Clark. Caroline Norris and Jonathan Cavendish serve as producers. Imaginarium Productions and Amazon MGM Studios are backing the project.
