Mel Gibson appeared on a Joe Rogan podcast recently, and during their conversation, the actor-director stated that he hopes to commence production on the sequel to 2004's The Passion of the Christ in 2026.

"There’s a lot required because it’s an acid trip. I’ve never read anything like it,” stated Gibson about the screenplay of the film, which he said is titled The Resurrection of the Christ. Judging by the title, the sequel will revolve around Jesus Christ’s getting resurrected. At the end of the 2004 original, Jesus got crucified.

Gibson revealed that he wrote the screenplay alongside his sibling Donal Gibson and Braveheart's Randall Wallace. The actor-director also plans on casting Jim Caviezel again for Jesus. He added that there is a plan to use de-aging technology for Caviezel's character because it has been two decades since the first film.

Calling the film an "ambitious” project, Gibson stated that its plot goes from “the fall of the angels to the death of the last apostle.”
