Kate Winslet opens up on her "first intimate experience": 'I'd kissed a few girls...'

Kate Winslet explained how those early moments in her life shaped her emotional understanding and later on-screen performances

Noted actor Kate Winslet has opened up about a deeply personal chapter in her life, sharing that her first intimate experiences as a teenager, were with women. Speaking on the recent episode of the Team Deakins podcast, the 50-year-old actor reflected on her early years and said her "first intimate experiences" were "with girls." Winslet added that she had also kissed boys but described herself as "not particularly evolved in either direction" at the time. She explained how those early moments in her life shaped her emotional understanding and later on-screen performances while discussing her breakout role in Heavenly Creatures (1994).

"I’ll share something I’ve never shared before. Some of my first intimate experiences as a young teen were actually with girls," Winslet said. "I’d kissed a few girls, and I’d kissed a few boys, but I wasn’t particularly evolved in either direction."

She added hat she was curious at the age. "I think there was something about the really intense connection that those two women had that I profoundly understood. I was so immediately sucked into the vortex of that world they were in that obviously became horrendously damaging to both of them, and they had huge insecurities and vulnerabilities," she noted.

Although she couldn't grasp the darker themes of the film and the relationship portrayed in it was deeply damaging, she revealed that she connected to it as it was rooted in vulnerability and insecurity that felt emotionally familiar to her at the time.

Heavenly creatures was a biopic, directed by Peter Jackson, from a screenplay he co-wrote with his partner, Fran Walsh. Apart from Winslet, the film also starred Melanie Lynskey, Sarah Peirse, Diana Kent, Clive Merrison and Simon O'Connor in supporting roles. The film was critically acclaimed and earned laurels for Winslet, who later went on to receive receive several big opportunities in Hollywood films. Some of them include Sense and Sensibility, Hamlet, and Titanic, which cemented her global stardom.

Recently, Winslet made her directorial debut with the Christmas drama Goodbye June, which is now streaming on Netflix. She also stars in the film alongside Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall and Helen Mirren.
