Hamlet trailer: Sheeba Chaddha and Riz Ahmed play mother and son in this Shakespeare retelling

A trailer for the upcoming film Hamlet starring Riz Ahmed in the lead, has been released. An adaptation of William Shakespeare's play of the same name, the film also stars Sheeba Chaddha.

Hamlet is directed by Aneil Karia, who won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film, along with Ahmed for The Long Goodbye. Karia directs the film which is written by Michael Lesslie. Ahmed and Lesslie also produce the film along with Allie Moore, Jim Wilson, and Tommy Oliver.

With Ahmed playing the titular character and Sheeba as his mother Gertrude, the rest of the cast includes Morfydd Clark as Ophelia, Joe Alwyn as Laertes, Art Malik as Claudius, Avijit Dutt as the ghost of Hamlet's father, and Timothy Spall as Polonius.

Set in London, the film will follow the titular character who seeks to avenge the death of his father by any means, as he descends from London's elite society to the underworld.

Hamlet has previously been adapted in India by Vishal Bharadwaj as Haider (2014), which stars Shahid Kapoor as the titular character. Further Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley will portray Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes, respectively, in Hamnet. The film will chronicle the personal hurdles of the bard, which led to the rise of his most famous play.
