A reboot of Basic Instinct is in development at United Artists, the Amazon MGM Studios subsidiary, with the 1992 original’s scenarist Joe Eszterhas to return for the project. However, as news about the project broke in July, the film’s makers did not confirm Sharon Stone’s comeback as Catherine Tramell. It now seems Stone is certainly not coming back for another film in the franchise. Making her instincts clear in a recent Today interview, Stone said that she does not understand the reason for another film in the franchise. Referring to the disastrous sequel from 2006, she questioned why the makers would do another Basic Instinct film given the franchise’s more recent history.

Stone expressed her lack of concern for the franchise in her conversation with the aforesaid show. “I’m at that stage in my life where I already retired once. And I already died a couple times. I’m like, ‘What are you going to do? Kill me again? Go ahead.”

Interestingly, Stone’s character does not die in either of the Basic Instinct films. Director Paul Verhoeven’s erotic thriller from 1992 follows a detective (Michael Douglas) who develops a fatal attraction with a seductive author (Stone) who is also his number one suspect in a murder case. Basic Instinct received mixed reviews from critics, but it reportedly ranked fourth in the list of films from 1992 with the highest box office collection worldwide.

Stone has expressed her displeasure at Douglas’ initial hesitation to work with her for the film. In a recent conversation with Business Insider, the actor attributed his hesitation to an argument she had with Douglas before her screen test with him for the film. The actor has also expressed the sheer lack of respect that she experienced regarding her own nudity in the film, although she has recognised the role it played in making a film icon.

Sharon Stone's upcoming films include Nobody 2 with Bob Odenkirk.
