Cillian Murphy will return as an exasperated individual, after Oppenheimer, in the upcoming drama Steve. Murphy won his first Oscar for his performance in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.
Steve is directed by Tim Mielants, who previously directed Murphy on Small Things Like These. The film is based on Max Porter's novel Shy; Porter is also writing the script for the film along with Mielants. The film will premire on Netflix on October 3.
With Murphy portraying the titular character and Jay Lycurgo as Shy, the cast also includes Tracy Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo, and Emily Watson. Watson also starred alongside Murphy in Mielants' Small Thing Like These.Murphy also produces Steve with Alan Moloney and Tina Pawlik, with Porter serving as an executive producer.
Steve is described as a reimagining of Max Porter's novel Shy. The story of the film, which is set in the mid-90s, is set on a seminal day in the life of head teacher Steve and his students at a last-chance reform school. Steve has to battle the school's integrity and prevent its oncoming closure as he struggles to take care of his own mental health. Besides Steve, there is Shy, a teenager trying to reconnect his aggressive nature with his inner fragility.
