Earlier, we reported about Ryan Gosling being in talks to star in filmmaker Shawn Levy's Star Wars film. The latest from the project is that Gosling has been cast in the film, titled Star Wars: Starfighter. The actor and the filmmaker made the announcement at the Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo. They film's makers also revealed that the next instalment in the Star Wars franchise will go on floors later this year and will hit theatres on May 28, 2027.

Set five years following the events of The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars: Starfighter marks Gosling and Levy's first collaboration together. Levy dismissed rumours about the film being a prequel. "It’s a new adventure," said the Deadpool and Wolverine filmmaker. On the other hand, Gosling described it as a film with "a great story with great and original characters" and "so much heart and adventure." The actor also said that Levy is the most "perfect filmmaker for this particular story."

Jonathan Tropper has been writing the film for the past two years. The makers are yet to reveal plot details, but it is not part of the Luke Skywalker universe.

Multiple other Star Wars films are in development at the Lucasfilm banner of Disney, with filmmakers James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Simon Kinberg. The Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy stars actor Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey from the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
