Rami Malek, who has mostly been part of projects with dramatic roles, is stepping into a new genre with the upcoming action thriller The Amateur. In the film, Malek stars as Charlie, a cryptographer for the government who is pushed towards a path of revenge after his wife is killed in a terrorist attack. The actor revealed that it was his desire for a different genre that made him sign up for The Amateur. That being said, unlike any other action film, he regards The Amateur as an "elegant, sophisticated, and smart" thriller that tells its story "from the point of view of someone who was underestimated”.

The film also stars the marvellous Ms Maisel Rachel Brosnahan, as Sarah, a determined intelligence officer and Charlie's wife. Sarah's death ultimately acts as a catalyst to the film's events. But in an action-focused film, the emotional core lies within the love that Sarah and Charlie share, according to Brosnahan. “They bring out the best in each other. It’s just a pure love, and so it makes it that much more difficult when he (Charlie) loses that,” said Brosnahan.

Rami Malek is not just the lead in The Amateur but also a producer for the action thriller. Speaking about his multiple roles for The Amateur, Malek stated, “The ability to produce gave me a certain accessibility and allowed me to speak towards not only my character but the ensemble at large.”

The Amateur also stars Caitriona Balfe as a skilled government agent and Laurence Fishburne as a high-ranking government official. The film is set to have an exclusive early release in Indian theatres on April 10.
