Aaron Pierre, known for his role in Rebel Ridge, is set to star as John Stewart in HBO's upcoming Green Lantern series. He will star opposite Hal Jordan, a role that actor Kyle Chandler has been in final talks for.
According to Deadline, Pierre landed the role after an extensive casting search. Pierre and Stephen James were in the top of the list to portray John Stewart.
Billed as a fresh take on DC Comics' Green Lantern, Lanterns is the first live-action series under the DC Universe. The show will have eight episodes.
Based on DC Comics' Green Lantern characters, Lanterns will have Ozark alum Chris Mundy as its showrunner. Mundy will also write and executive produce it alongside Damon Lindelof (Lost and Watchmen) and Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Mister Miracle). James Hawes is set to direct the first two episodes and will also take on an executive producer role.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television will produce the show that has long been in the making. It follows the story of rookie Lantern John Stewart and veteran Lantern Hal Jordan. Together, they find themselves embroiled in a chilling mystery set on Earth, investigating a murder that occurs in the heart of America.
Pierre, who was recently seen in Rebel Ridge on Netflix, will voice the titular character of Mufasa in the Lion King animated prequel for Disney, helmed by Barry Jenkins. He is currently shooting for Apple TV+'s The Morning Show. His other credits include playing Malcolm X in the Nat Geo series Genius: MLK/X and starring in Barry Jenkins’ limited series The Underground Railroad. He also previously appeared in the DC series Krypton in the role of Dev-Em.
