In 2021, we reported about Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor starring in a romance film titled The History of Sound set against a World War I backdrop. According to the latest Variety report, Mescal is also one of the executive producers for the film from director Oliver Hermanus. Production on the gay romance drama was completed earlier this year. It is the first film that Mescal shot after Gladiator II, with filmmaker Ridley Scott.

Hermanus directed it from a Ben Shattuck script, based on the latter's short story. The Gladiator II star has been part of the project as an executive producer right from the start.

The plot follows David (O'Connor) and Lionel (Mescal), two youngsters, who are keen on recording the lives, music and voices of their fellow Americans during World War I. They form a romantic relationship as they start logging the events.

End Cue's Andrew Kortschak and Lisa Ciuffetti are the producers of The History of Sound, along with Andrea Roa.
