TriStar Pictures has acquired the comedy film The Breadwinner from comedian Nate Bargatze and writer-producer Dan Lagana, with Bargatze set to star in his first lead film role. Bargatze and Lagana are both producing the project, joined by Jeremy Latcham through Wonder Project. Currently in the early stages, the two are working on the script, though plot details remain under wraps.

Known for his clean, universally appealing humor, Bargatze ranks as the world’s highest-earning comedian and is selling out venues worldwide on his Be Funny tour. His Netflix specials, The Tennessee Kid (2019) and Greatest Average American (2021), have been met with critical acclaim, with the latter earning a Grammy nomination. His recent Prime Video special, Nate Bargatze: Hello World, set a record as Prime’s most-watched original comedy special within its first month.

This year, Bargatze will also co-produce a holiday variety special for CBS alongside Lorne Michaels, and he’s returning to Netflix with a two-special deal. The first, Your Friend, Nate Bargatze, premieres globally on December 24. Additionally, his upcoming book, Big Dumb Eyes: Stories From a Simpler Mind, is scheduled for release by Grand Central Publishing in May 2025.

Lagana recently co-wrote and executive produced Rudy Mancuso’s Amazon film Musica, which premiered to positive reviews. His previous credits include serving as showrunner for Netflix’s American Vandal and co-creating MTV’s Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous, which helped launch Bo Burnham’s career.

Latcham produced Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Bad Times at the El Royale, and is a senior adviser for Wonder Project, with film projects in development at Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures. He also has an overall deal with Hasbro Entertainment, where he’s working on a Dungeons & Dragons sequel and other projects with Skydance and Lionsgate.
