Editor Bud S Smith, best known for his work on films such as The Exorcist, Flashdance, and Sorcerer, has died at the age of 88. His dialogue editor wife Lucy Coldsnow-Smith confirmed the news. Smith, whose career spanned five decades, got nominated twice for Best Editing Oscar: the first time in 1974 for his film with director William Friedkin The Exorcist and once more for his work with director Adrian Lyne on Flashdance.

Smith served as the main editor for the opening portions of The Exorcist in Iraq, which kickstarted a collaborative work partnership with Friedkin. Smith would later go on to work on the filmmaker's To Live and Die in LA, Sorcerer, and Cruising. The film Sorcerer, especially, is revered for the tension it maintained in its portrayal of truckers moving explosives in South America. He got his first credit for The Bold Men, a 1965 TV film.

He is survived by his spouse Lucy.
