A sequel to the legendary Star Wars parody film Spaceballs is in the works from Amazon MGM Studios. Josh Gad is set to headline in the film as well as produce it along with Mel Brooks.

Josh Greenbaum, known for Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021) will direct from Gad’s script written with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Details regarding the plot are under wraps. Kevin Salter will serve as executive producer on the project.

Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez are for their work on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Mutant Mayhem, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Addams Family 2 and the upcoming Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy.

Gad is best known as the voice of Olaf in Frozen and LeFou in the live-action Beauty and the Beast film.

The original 1987 film was released a decade after George Lucas' sci-fi classic Star Wars and starred Bill Pullman as Lone Star, John Candy as Barf, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, Rick Moranis as Lord Dark Helmet and Brooks as President Skroob and Yogurt. Over the years, the film has become a cult hit and is considered as one of Brooks' signature films.

Brooks paved the way for parody filmmaking with a number of comedic movies throughout the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. His run of classics includes films like Young Frankenstein, History of the World and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. He most recently co-created Hulu’s History of the World: Part II, a series following up his classic 1981 comedy History of the World, Part I. Apart from serving as a narrator on Only Murders in the Building, he also made an appearance on the hit comedy drama series.
