A biopic on Madonna seems to be back on track, going by the singer's recent social media activity. The project was stalled in January 2023 at Universal Pictures.

Madonna shared photos on Instagram that depict herself working on a typewriter surrounded by papers. Notably, a potential title, Who's That Girl, is visible on what seems like a screenplay page, referencing the pop icon's 1987 song and film. Additionally, the script mentions "rewrites by Madonna and ECW," supposedly an acronym for screenwriter Diablo Cody's replacement on the project, Erin Cressida Wilson.

The biopic's development reportedly faced challenges as script drafts exceeded 180 pages, leading to discussions of splitting the film or creating a miniseries. Ultimately, these ideas were shelved.

Madonna was originally tapped to direct the film, with Julia Garner emerging as the lead candidate to portray the singer after an extensive casting process. Actors such as Florence Pugh, Odessa Young, and Alexa Demie reportedly participated in auditions with demanding choreography sessions overseen by Madonna herself and her choreographer.

Amy Pascal of Universal Pictures was originally set to serve as a producer on the film. Currently, it remains unclear whether Universal Pictures will remain involved in the project.
