Screenwriter and director Sam Raimi has addressed rumours about helming a potential fourth film in Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire playing the lead.

Marvel fans have been speculating for quite some time that Raimi would reunite with Maguire for a potential fourth installment of the Spidey universe he created in 2002. But the director quashed all rumours regarding the film and said that he has not been approached to work the film.

“Well, I haven’t heard about that yet,” Raimi said in an interview with CBR during WonderCon about the rumours. “I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!'”

He continued, “I’m not sure, but I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it.”

Interestingly, the Evil Dead director didn’t write off the possibility of taking on Spider-Man 4 completely.

“I haven't talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has, or Columbia Pictures,” he added. “But, I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I'm on great terms with them. I'm sure I would hear about it if it was in the works. I think so. I don't know."

Raimi is known for directing the Spider-Man trilogy (2002–2007). In 2022, he directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for Marvel Studios. During an interview in the same year, he said he was open to the idea of directing a fourth Spider-Man film to work with Maguire and Kirsten Dunst again.

Actor Thomas Hayden Church, who plays Flint Marko aka Sandman mentioned Raimi’s return on Spider-Man 4. In a conversation with ComicBook. com. "I think Sam is gonna do another Spider-Man with Tobey (Maguire), and that’s the one that … They had an option for me to do Spiderman 4 when there was going to be a Spider-Man 4. They had an option for me to come back. So if it happens, that would be fantastic."

Tobey Maguire last appeared as Spider-Man in 2021’s crossover Blockbuster, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
