Thomas Kail set to helm Moana

Tony Award-winning filmmaker of Broadway's Hamilton Thomas Kail is set to helm the upcoming Disney's live action adaptation of animated film Moana. The film will mark his directorial debut.

The live-action adaptation was recently announced with Dwayne Johnson, who played Maui in the film. He will be reprising his role for the live-action version along with Auli'i Cravalho, who played Moana. Moana is set in ancient Polynesia and tells the story of strong-willed Moana, who is the daughter of village chief. As a chosen one to reunite a relic with Goddess, Moana sails to meat demigod Maui and save her people.

The upcoming film is backed by Dwayne under his banner Seven Bucks Production along with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Beau Flynn is also backing the film under Flyn Picture Co. Moana is penned by Jared Bush along with Dana Ledoux Miller. The filming is set to begin in October in Hawaii before moving to Georgia.
