Actor Will Smith is reportedly set to return for the Aladdin sequel, reprising his role as Genie from the 2019 Disney musical fantasy film.

Based on the One Thousand And One Nights series of Middle Eastern folk tales, the script work is underway.

According to aceshowbiz.com, the film is set to go on floors at the end of this year. The report also notes that this will be the first film that Smith shot after the Oscars slap controversy. While Disney is keen to stand by Smith and get him back for the sequel, the other cast members including Mena Massoud, who stars as Aladdin, and Naomi Scott, who plays Jasmine, in the first film, are reportedly eager to return for the second instalment.

The 2019 American musical fantasy film is directed by Guy Ritchie. He co-wrote with John August. It is co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Rideback.  It is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1992 animated film of the same name. It is based on Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, a French addition to the Middle Eastern folk tale One Thousand and One Nights.
