Apple Original film Emancipation, starring Will Smith, is set to premiere in theatres on December 2, followed by release on Apple TV+ on December 9, the streaming platform announced in a press release.

Emancipation is directed and executive produced by Antoine Fuqua, with Smith backing the production. According to Apple TV+, Emancipation tells the "triumphant story of Peter (Smith), a man who escapes from slavery, relying on his wits, unwavering faith and deep love for his family to evade cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom".

Inspired from the 1863 photos of Whipped Peter taken during a Union Army medical examination that was published in Harper's Weekly, the photos show gruesome conditions left by slavery on its victims. Apart from Smith, the film also features Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor, and Mustafa Shakir,  Steven Ogg, Grant Harvey, among others.
