M3GAN sequel is already in the works at Universal

With the film yet to release, Universal is confident enough to already consider making a sequel for M3GAN. The thriller film is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on 6 January, it was earlier announced to release on 16 January before being moved up to coincide with Martin Luther King day. Universal Pictures has made the film in collaboration with Blumhouse productions and Atomic Monsters to produce the film.

The film tells the story of a recently orphaned girl who is gifted an experimental robot that looks like a real-life girl who goes by the name of Megan. Things take a dark turn when the AI that controls the robot goes rogue and starts killing people in order to protect the girl. Clips from the film’s trailer went viral on sites like TikTok, with people trying to replicate the creepy-looking dance moves of the child robot. 

Known for producing popular horror franchises like Conjuring and Insidious, director James Wan will be producing the film under his banner Atomic Monsters. Akela Cooper has written a screenplay based on a story by James Wan. Director Gerard Johnstone, who is helming the project, is also attached to write the screenplay for the upcoming DC animated film Justice League Dark.

The film stars Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, and Brian Jordan Alvarez. Amie Donald plays the titular robot in the film.
