Sam Mendes pens a love letter to cinema in the new teaser for Empire of Light

The new teaser for Sam Mendes' upcoming film Empire of Light has been released online. The trailer starts with a poetic voice-over narration that is full to the brim with love for cinema. The visual language for the film is crafted by legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins. The Academy Award winner has previously collaborated with Sam Mendes on Skyfall and 1917

Set in the 1980s in a seaside English town, the film revolves around a romance that develops between two people as they bond over their mutual love for old cinema. The director is co-producing the film under his banner Neal Street Productions along with his frequent collaborator Pippa Harris. Mendes and Harris had both previously worked on the Academy Award-winning 1917.

The film stars Olivia Colman, Micheal Ward, Tom Brooke, Tanya Moodie, Hannah Onslow, Crystal Clarke, Toby Jones, and Colin Firth. The film is set to premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival, slated to take place between 8-18 September. Empire of Light will receive a worldwide theatrical release on 9 December.
