Actor Billy Bob Thornton will guest star in the much-awaited Yellowstone prequel series 1883. The actor will star alongside the previously announced cast including Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw Faith Hill, Isabel May, and LaMonica Garrett.

The series will follow the Dutton family who set out on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. The series is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana.

Thornton will play the role of Marshal Jim Courtright. Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the episodes of season 1, is directing the pilot.

1883 is produced by 101 Studios and Bosque Ranch Productions. The series is executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, John Linson, Art Linson, David Glasser, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari.

1883 is set for a launch on  December 19 on the ViacomCBS streaming service. Meanwhile, the fourth season of Yellowstone is set for a premiere in November this year.

Thornton recently wrapped production on the fourth season of Amazon series Goliath. On the big screen, he recently starred in the Sam Taylor-Johnson drama A Million Little Pieces, and will be seen in the Russo Brothers’ The Gray Man co-starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, and Dhanush.
