After crossing the Rs 100 crore mark in Tamil Nadu and grossing over Rs 200 crore worldwide in its first week, Suriya’s Karuppu has continued its theatrical run with a decent hold into the second weekend. The RJ Balaji directorial collected Rs 9.04 crore gross on Day 8 (second Friday), followed by a jump to Rs 14.14 crore gross on Day 9 (second Saturday), as per a report on Sacnilk.com.

While the film witnessed a gradual decline during the weekdays after its strong opening weekend, the second Saturday numbers indicate renewed momentum at the box office. The film’s occupancy also improved from 31.4% on Friday to 42.1% on Saturday, with the number of shows increasing from 4,521 to 4,987. The film's worldwide collections now stand at Rs 217.74 crore with Rs 154.99 crore in India alone.

Karuppu had opened to Rs 17.93 crore gross on its first Friday and went on to record its highest single-day collection on the first Sunday with Rs 32.84 crore gross. The film now looks set to add another solid weekend total before entering its second week on weekdays.

Karuppu brings Suriya back together with Trisha for the first time after 2005's Aaru. The film also stars Indrans, Swasika, Sshivada, Natty, Supreeth Reddy, and Anagha Maya Ravi, among others. Suriya stars as the titular guardian deity, who assumes the form of a lawyer after a devotee in distress, pleads for justice.

Reportedly, it has become the highest-grossing film in Suriya's career, breaking the previous record held by Retro. The achievement is noteworthy, especially considering the mostly mixed reviews it has received from critics. Fans have embraced the film, regardless of the criticism.

An except from CE's review of Karuppu reads, "Every other character in the film is either wasted at best or forgettable at worst, including Swasika and Sshivada, who get thankless roles, and Trisha, who turns back time only to play a character that should have been left behind."

Produced by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu under Dream Warrior Pictures, the film has music by Sai Abhyankkar, cinematography by GK Kalaivanan, and editing by R Kalaivanan.
