Suriya’s latest action drama Karuppu has been enjoying a dream run at the box office, crossing a major milestone of Rs 200 crore in worldwide collections. In Tamil Nadu alone, the film has reportedly earned over Rs 100 crore. Director RJ Balaji, elated by the film’s success, recently revealed that the project was initially written with Vijay in mind, before the actor made his full-fledged entry into politics.
In a recent press interaction, the actor-director-commentator said, "Me along with my team members Rahul and Ashwin wrote it with the CM in mind. Initially, I wrote a story and pitched it to Vijay sir. Later, when I got the opportunity to narrate it to Suriya, I modified it. Suriya acted as a Singam in the namesake film. Nobody else can do it, right? I also added that 'watermelon scene' for him," he explained, sharing his happiness on the film's success and how audiences are celebrating it.
Suriya stars as the titular guardian deity in Karuppu, who assumes the form of a lawyer after a devotee in distress, pleads for justice. The film, which was set for release on May 14, released a day later owing to financial issues. It however, picked up due to positive word-of-mouth reviews and criticial ratings.
The cast of the film also includes Trisha, Indrans, Swasika, Sshivada, Anagha Maya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy, Natty Natraj, among others. RJ Balaji, who has written and directed the film, portrays the antagonist, Baby Kannan.
Sai Abhyankkar has composed music for the film, making it his sophomore Tamil feature release, after the Pradeep Ranganathan-starrer Dude (2025). Other members of the technical team include cinematographer GK Vishnu and editor R Kalaivanan.
