Remember when Suriya made a brief appearance in 2022's Vikram as a character named 'Rolex' and earned a massive fan base for it? The character became so popular that there has since been talks of a Rolex spin-off film. Some moments from Suriya's latest film Karuppu bring to mind the aura that the actor has in the role of Rolex.
The film, directed by RJ Balaji and also starring the filmmaker in a crucial role, opposite Suriya, has grossed more than 200 crore from theatres and became the actor's highest-grossing film in his career. The actor has been receiving plenty of appreciation and congratulatory messages.
Earlier this Saturday, Lokesh Kanagaraj, the director who is also known for Vikram, took to social media and shared his thoughts on the success of Suriya's latest film. Taking to X, Lokesh wrote, "I know I’m a little late to the party, but I felt very happy hearing rave reviews for Karuppu."
Lokesh then congratulated the whole team behind the film, including Suriya, RJ Balaji, producer SR Prabhu, and composer Sai Abhyankkar for the success of the film.
There have been mixed reviews for Karuppu, which also stars Trisha, Indrans, Anagha Maya Ravi, Natty, SShivada, Swaswika, and Supreeth Reddy, among others. However, it has overcome financial hurdles and criticism to become the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026 so far. Interestingly, Lokesh too had a similar experience with his last release Coolie, which critics mostly disliked even as the film went to gross more than 500 crore from theatres worldwide.
Suriya's upcoming films include Vishwanath and Sons with director Venky Atluri and co-star Mamitha Baiju and a film with Aavesham filmmaker Jithu Madhavan that also stars Nazriya Nazim. On the other hand, Lokesh is making his debut as a lead actor with DC, directed by Captain Miller fame Arun Matheswaran and co-starring Wamiqa Gabbi. Lokesh also has a film with Allu Arjun in the pipeline.
