On Friday, a week after the release of Suriya's 45th film, Karuppu, the makers announced that it has grossed Rs 100 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. This comes after we reported, on Thursday, that the film had grossed Rs 200 crore worldwide. This marks a new milestone for the RJ Balaji directorial.
Despite the milestone, the film's daily box-office numbers have been dropping. After earning Rs 12.39 crore on Day 6, the collections reduced to Rs 9.38 crore on Day 7. The second weekend of the film is expected to play a major role in boosting box-office numbers.
Karuppu brings Suriya back together with Trisha for the first time after 2005's Aaru. The film also stars Indrans, Swasika, Sshivada, Natty, Supreeth Reddy, and Anagha Maya Ravi, among others. Suriya stars as the titular guardian deity, who assumes the form of a lawyer after a devotee in distress, pleads for justice.
Reportedly, it has become the highest-grossing film in Suriya's career, breaking the previous record held by Retro. The achievement is noteworthy, especially considering the mostly mixed reviews it has received from critics. Fans have embraced the film, regardless of the criticism.
An except from CE's review of Karuppu reads, "Every other character in the film is either wasted at best or forgettable at worst, including Swasika and Sshivada, who get thankless roles, and Trisha, who turns back time only to play a character that should have been left behind."
Produced by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu under Dream Warrior Pictures, the film has music by Sai Abhyankkar, cinematography by GK Kalaivanan, and editing by R Kalaivanan.
