Suriya fans, disappointed after Karuppu could not open in theatres on Thursday, flocked to screens with rejuvenated spirits on Friday, after the production house officially confirmed the film's release. Along with the fans, the film's director, RJ Balaji; female lead Trisha; music composer Sai Abhyankkar; and Suriya's brother Karthi were seen at the first day, first show at Rohini Theatre in Chennai.

A video of fans swarming around RJ Balaji at the entrance of the theatre is now being shared online. In another clip, he's seen addressing the audience saying, "Let’s have a great time. We’ve crossed all obstacles. Hope you like the film; the film is all yours now." A video, featuring a song performance by Sai Abhyankkar, is also being circulated widely. Just a day ago, RJ Balaji put out an emotional video apologising to ardent fans for letting them down when the film didn't hit theatres as planned.

Scheduled to hit theatres on May 14, Karuppu did not release because of unsettled dues from the production house's end, as multiple reports suggest. After the morning shows were cancelled, fans hoped for at least a matinee or an evening show for the film. As the issues were yet to be resolved, the makers waited till Friday to release the film. The film is backed by SR Prabhu and SR Prakash Babu under the Dream Warrior Pictures banner.

With Suriya playing the role of Saravanan (a reference to the actor's real name) and Trisha as Preethi, the cast of Karuppu also includes Natty Natraj, Mansoor Ali Khan, Swasika, Sshivadha, Anagha Maya Ravi, and Supreeth Reddy, among others.

Sai Abhyankkar has composed music for Karuppu, his sophomore Tamil project, which features lyrics by Pa Vijay, Vivek, Vishnu Edavan, Asal Kolaar, Adesh Krishna, and Arun Srinivasan. The crew of the film includes cinematographer GK Vishnu, editor R Kalaivanan, production designer Arun Venjaramoodu, and stunt choreographers Anbariv and Vikram Mor. Aravendaraj Baskaran is serving as the executive producer on the film.
