After days of openly admitting that Tamil Nadu’s political turbulence had overshadowed the promotions of Karuppu, director RJ Balaji has now declared that the storm has finally passed. With Vijay officially sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Balaji announced that the film’s much-awaited trailer will finally be unveiled on Sunday evening.
Taking to X, the filmmaker thanked fans who continued to support the film despite its promotional campaign getting drowned out by the state’s dramatic political developments over the past week.
“Amidst all the political chaos, I thank each and every fan who kept the interest & hype alive for #Karuppu,” he wrote, giving a special mention to fan pages and supporters who stood by the team during what he described as “tough times".
RJ Balaji then hinted that the situation had now reached a “happy ending" before confirming that the trailer would release at 7 pm alongside the opening of advance bookings. He also promised that audiences would witness “peak sambavam” from Suriya in the film.
The post comes just days after Balaji candidly addressed the delay in releasing the trailer. At the time, he revealed that the makers deliberately chose to hold back promotional material because the rapidly shifting political developments in Tamil Nadu were dominating public attention.
Speaking in a video message earlier, Balaji had said the trailer was already complete, but the team feared that releasing it amid the political frenzy would cause it to get lost in the noise. Referring to the “unexpected twists” unfolding after the elections, he said the makers wanted to wait for clarity before resuming promotions.
While the complete details of the plot are yet to be unveiled, Suriya teased that Karuppu will be a 'spoof' film, in that it will make the audiences laugh but also introspect.
With Suriya playing the role of Saravanan (a reference to the actor's real name) and Trisha as Preethi, the cast of Karuppu also includes Natty Natraj, Mansoor Ali Khan, Swasika, Sshivadha, Anagha Maya Ravi, and Supreeth Reddy, among others.
Sai Abhyankkar has composed music for Karuppu, his sophomore Tamil project, which features lyrics by Pa Vijay, Vivek, Vishnu Edavan, Asal Kolaar, Adesh Krishna, and Arun Srinivasan.
The crew of the film includes cinematographer GK Vishnu, editor R Kalaivanan, production designer Arun Venjaramoodu, and stunt choreographers Anbariv and Vikram Mor.
Karuppu is produced by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabu under their Dream Warrior Pictures banner. Aravendaraj Baskaran is serving as the executive producer on the film. The film will open in theatres on May 14.
