Even as Dhanush continues to act and direct a myriad of films, updates regarding Vada Chennai 2 continue to follow up everywhere he goes. During the pre-release event of his upcoming film Kara, he revealed his 'funk' hairstyle, pointing out how he changed it after audience's wishes. With the hairstyle being reminiscent of one of his looks from the 2018 Vetri Maaran directorial, Dhanush said, "Vada Chennai 2 will arrive soon. It will come with a bang. To win, first we have to fight. The distance is not as far as you think. It has come closer. Anbuvin Ezhuchi (the tagline of the sequel) will arrive in a big way."

Earlier, during the pre-release event of Idli Kadai, the actor revealed that the sequel for the crime drama will start filming from this year and will release sometime in 2027. However, an official production is yet to begin. Vetri Maaran is returning to helm the second part which has Ishari K Ganesh of Vels Film International backing the project.

Vada Chennai was an intense crime drama that featured the power tussle between gangs in North Chennai. The film features Guna (Samuthirakani) and Senthil (Kishore) turning against their gang leader, Rajan (Ameer), as he hinders the two henchmen's thirst for power and money. In the turn of events, Guna and Senthil turn against each other, and their struggle pulls in a talented carrom board player, Anbu (Dhanush), inadvertently. The film was a critical and commercial success at the box office and earned a cult status in the years that came by.

While a sequel was announced soon, it faced multiple postponements as the director and actor focussed on their other film commitments. Vetri Maaran is currently filming Arasan, a spin-off from Vada Chennai where the core characters of Guna (Samuthirakani), Senthil (Kishore), and Chandra (Andrea Jeremiah) are returning. Headlined by Silambarasan, the film also stars Vijay Sethupathi, Yogalakshmi of Heart Beat and Tourist Family fame in a lead role, along with Jibin Gopinath in a supporting role. Although they exist in the same universe, Dhanush's character Anbu is not a part of Arasan.

Dhanush's upcoming film Kara, which is set to release in theatres on April 30, is directed by Por Thozhil-fame Vignesh Raja. Alfred Prakash has written for the film along with the filmmaker. Besides Kara, Dhanush has a slew of films in his line-up which includes D55 with Rajkumar Periyasamy, D56 with Tamizharasan Pachamuthu and a film with Mari Selvaraj.
