Dhanush has revealed a new update regarding his much-anticipated Vada Chennai 2 with Vetri Maaran. Speaking during the pre-release event of his upcoming directorial Idli Kadai which was held in Madurai, Dhanush revealed that the sequel for the crime drama will start filming from next year and will release sometime in 2027.

Much details about Vada Chennai 2 are unknown at the moment. Dhanush and director Vetri Maaran will come back for the project. Ishari K Ganesh of Vels Film International is backing the film.

Elsewhere during the event, Dhanush recalled his memories associated with Madurai and how the team filmed Aadukalam (2011) on the busy streets of the city where people didn't recognise him. He also reiterated that Idli Kadai is a simple and light-hearted film that audiences across ages can enjoy.

Meanwhile, Vetri Maaran is also working on the untitled STR 49. As previously reported, the film is backed by Kalaipuli S Thanu of V Creations. The film is set in the Vada Chennai universe, and a few characters, settings, and aspects from that film will be a part of this film. The film will maintain the same timeline as Vada Chennai. It is expected to feature Andrea reprising her role as Chandra, Samuthirakani as Guna, and Kishore as Senthil in pivotal roles, alongside Manikandan and Nelson Dilipkumar. However, a confirmation regarding the same is awaited.

Vada Chennai (2018) is an intense crime drama that features the power tussle between gangs in North Chennai. The film features Guna (Samuthirakani) and Senthil (Kishore) turning against their gang leader, Rajan (Ameer), as he hinders the two henchmen's thirst for power and money. In the turn of events, Guna and Senthil turn against each other, and their struggle pulls in a talented carrom board player, Anbu (Dhanush), inadvertently. Anbu faces the challenge of overcoming the greedy gangsters while also following in the footsteps of Rajan, who aimed to protect the fishermen's hamlet from being usurped by politicians and businessmen. This is how Vada Chennai concludes, setting the stage for the highly anticipated sequel.

In Idly Kadai, Dhanush stars as Murugan. The star cast includes Nithya Menen as Kayalvizhi, Sathyaraj as Vishnu Varadhan, Arun Vijay as Ashwin, Samuthirakani as Marisamy, Rajkiran as Sivanesan, Shalini Pandey as Meera and Parthiban as R Arivu. He had previously directed Pa PaandiRaayan and Nilavukku En Mel Ennadi Kobam.

The technical crew comprises Dhanush's frequent collaborator, composer GV Prakash, cinematographer Kiran Koushik, editor GK Prasanna, and art director Jackson.

The film is produced by Akash Bhaskaran through his Dawn Pictures banner and Dhanush through his Wunderbar Pictures banner. Inban Udhayanidhi, son of Tamil Nadu's Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, will get his first film credit as a distributor.
