After the postponement of the release of Vijay's last film, Jana Nayagan, the fans of the actor were looking forward to the re-release of Theri, initially slated for January 23. The anticipation was further fuelled by the usual Vijay-Ajith clash, as the latter's Mankatha was also scheduled for re-release on the same day. However, Theri's producer, Kalaipuli S Thanu, decided to reschedule the re-release after the makers of Draupathi 2 requested the same.
Now, the same Vijay-Ajith face-off is set to happen on the big screens, as the former's Ghilli and the latter's Thunivu are slated to be re-released on February 20. Boney Kapoor announced the re-release of H Vinoth's directorial on Tuesday.
Ghilli (2004), helmed by Dharani, also stars Trisha and Prakash Raj in lead roles. The film was re-released last year in April and became a blockbuster hit at the box office. The film follows Saravana Velu, who shies away from studies to pursue Kabaddi. He is caught in the crosshair of a Madurai gangster, Muthupandi (Prakash Raj), who courts Dhanalakshmi (Trisha) against her wishes while he appears for a Kabaddi tournament.
Ghilli is a remake of Okkadu (2003) starring Mahesh Babu and Bhumika. Owing to the huge success of Ghilli, the action film was remade in Kannada as Ajay (2006), in Bengali as Jor (2008) and in Hindi as Tevar (2015).
Thunivu, on the other hand, hit theatres for Pongal in 2023, alongside Vijay's Varisu. The film marks H Vinoth's third collaboration with Ajith after Nerkonda Paarvai and Valimai. The film revolves around a bank heist, orchestrated by Ajith, and the chain of events that lead up to it. Thunivu also stars Manju Warrier, Samuthirakani, John Kokken, and Prem, among others.
