Ajith Kumar's 50th film Mankatha continues to be in discussion even after a decade of its release. The much-loved action thriller directed by Venkat Prabhu, went on to break several box office records and was critically acclaimed at the time of its release. 13 years later, in 2024, the film was re-released in theatres on Ajith Kumar's 53rd birthday, along with a couple of his other hit films from his career, which include the 2007 hit Billa (directed by Vishnuvardhan) and the 2001 action-drama Dheena (directed by AR Murugadoss). However, Mankatha faced issues ahead of its re-release and eventually hit theatres outside Tamil Nadu and India.
The film is now expected to finally hit theatres in the state and the rest of the country soon. Venkat Prabhu teased fans with a one-word X post that said, "The Kingmaker" which has sparked a barrage of speculations online. Many users believe the post is linked to Mankatha which is reported to have a re-release in January. However, no official confirmation regarding the same has been revealed yet.
Previously, Venkat Prabhu expressed his sadness on not being able to re-release the film at the said date last year. Replying to a user's question, he said he tried his best, but since the rights are with Sun Pictures only they have to take the final call.
The ensemble cast of Mankatha includes Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, Raai Laxmi, Anjali, Andrea Jeremiah, Ashwin Kakumanu, Vaibhav Reddy, Premji Amaren, Mahat Raghavendra, Jayaprakash, Aravind Akash and Subbu Panchu.
The filmmaker last made The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) with Vijay, which hit theatres last year. He is currently working on SK26 with Sivakarthikeyan which is said to involve sci-fi elements, akin to GOAT.
Meanwhile Ajith Kumar is currently focussed on his racing pursuits. In February, Ajith will begin shooting for AK64, his second film with Adhik Ravichandran after Good Bad Ugly.
