Karthi returns to theatres after a year following Meiyazhagan with Nalan Kumarasamy's Vaa Vaathiyaar this week, playing a character who emulates late actor-politician MG Ramachandran. Speaking at the film's pre-release event, the Paiyaa actor heaped praise on Nalan Kumarasamy saying, "Many directors like him. Any set I go to, they would ask me, 'Are you working on a Nalan sir film?' There are many fanboys for you and I feel you shouldn't have deprived them of your films. He lives by a 'Thug Life' motive in his life."

Sharing a few words on his filmmaking process, he said, "Like his dialogue in Soodhu Kavvum, you need time to understand his ideas. Even when you understand them, you can never imagine it."

Karthi went on to recall how he faced a similar scenario while working on Selvaraghavan's Aayirathil Oruvan. "He would have written a scene. When you think you can understand and act accordingly, you will never be able to decipher it. Only when he explains, you can understand it. Similarly, Nalan's nuances and works will be imagined in a parallel world altogether. It was very interesting and exciting to work with him," he added.

Elaborating on the challenges he faced while working on it, he said, "I thought I can kidnap children or politicians in this film, but Nalan brought me Vaa Vaathiyaar. It was a huge challenge, but I was hesitant and doubtful if I could pull it off, but I understood that we have to face our fears to enter the next stage. No matter how many times you succeed, this world will continue to speak about your failures. So you have to push yourself to try new things."

He added, "I did this film only because I knew I could count on Nalan. Working on Vaa Vaathiyaar is like walking on a sword. There are only two scenarios: Either you can win or lose terribly that people will throw you away. This is a risky subject in that way for an actor, but as a movie, it is a fun and entertaining film. Our film is a tribute to the classic Indian masala films."

The film, which hits theatres on December 12, stars Krithi Shetty as the female lead. The action-comedy entertainer marks the first collaboration between Karthi and director Nalan Kumarasamy. Vaa Vaathiyaar also stars Rajkiran, Sathyaraj, Anandaraj, Karunakaran, GM Sundar, Shilpa Manjunath, and Ramesh Thilak in pivotal roles.
