Rajinikanth’s Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, showed strong recovery over its second weekend and has now collected an estimated Rs 256.75 crore across India in 11 days, according to Sacnilk.com.
After opening to a record-breaking Rs 65 crore on August 14, the film maintained steady momentum over the Independence Day weekend, crossing Rs 150 crore in just three days. Its first week closed at Rs 229.65 crore, with Tamil audiences contributing the bulk at Rs 149.95 crore, followed by Telugu (Rs 51.6 crore), Hindi (Rs 26.05 crore) and Kannada (Rs 2.05 crore).
However, the film saw a drastic decline in collections from Monday onwards, slipping to single digits by Day 5. But with the start of its second weekend, Coolie bounced back. After earning Rs 5.85 crore on Day 9, the film almost doubled its numbers on Day 10 with Rs 10.5 crore before holding steady with Rs 10.75 crore on Day 11.
With its India net total now at Rs 256.75 crore, Coolie is inching closer to the Rs 260 crore milestone. Whether the film can sustain its momentum into the coming weekdays will decide how quickly it can march towards Rs 300 crore.
Backed by Sun Pictures, Coolie stars Rajinikanth alongside Nagarjuna, Aamir Khan, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, Upendra and Rachita Ram. The film has music by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Girish Gangadharan and editing by Philomin Raj.
An excerpt from CE’s review of the film reads, “There are so many characters and yet, the writing doesn't allow any of them to flourish except for Soubin’s Dayalan and Shruti’s Preethi. Surprisingly, even Deva gets a raw deal as his start-stop arc is as random as the machinations of Simon and the machine of Rajasekhar.”
